Midwife video consultation
All pregnant women are welcome to a midwife video consultation – whether they have an uncomplicated pregnancy or have questions or concerns. A midwife video consultation is suitable at any stage of pregnancy when professional advice, clarification, or support with decision-making is needed.
The consultation is intended for expectant mothers who wish to receive professional, evidence-based, and reliable counseling during pregnancy without attending in person. The service is available to pregnant women both in Estonia and abroad and does not require prior registration at the Fetal Ultrasound Center.
The midwife helps assess whether the situation requires further diagnostics or whether monitoring and counseling are sufficient.
When is a midwife video consultation appropriate?
Pregnancy-related symptoms and well-being
The consultation is suitable for discussing and managing pregnancy-related symptoms, including:
- nausea and vomiting
- heartburn and digestive problems
- bloating and gastrointestinal spasms
- anemia
- vaginal discharge and recurrent vaginal symptoms
- swelling, pregnancy-related hemorrhoids, and varicose veins
- postpartum contraception counseling
If needed, the midwife may issue digital prescriptions for medications within the limits permitted by law.
Guidance on the necessity of tests and examinations
The consultation is suitable if you have questions regarding:
- prenatal chromosomal screening
- non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT)
- genetic screening during pregnancy
During the consultation:
- The purpose of each test is explained
- It is clarified what the test can and cannot determine
- The indications for testing are discussed
- It is assessed whether and when a doctor’s consultation or further investigations are needed
Guidance on ultrasound examinations
The midwife helps:
- explain the purpose and differences of various ultrasound examinations
- assess which examination is appropriate for your situation
- determine the optimal timing for an examination
- evaluate whether a doctor’s consultation is necessary
Vaccination counseling during pregnancy
The consultation includes advice on vaccinations during pregnancy, including their safety, timing, and benefits. If needed, vaccination can be arranged during an in-person visit.
Limitations of the service
A midwife video consultation:
- does not replace a doctor’s appointment in higher-risk pregnancies
- does not include issuing or extending sick leave
- does not include performing examinations or vaccinations
If necessary, the patient will be invited for an in-person visit with a midwife or a gynecologist.
