Prenatal Expert Assessment

Fetal ultrasound examination during a prenatal expert assessment

Fetal ultrasound examination during a prenatal expert assessment.

A prenatal expert assessment is a comprehensive fetal ultrasound examination combined with a physician consultation, designed for an expectant woman or couple who wish to receive a transparent, independent, and calm evaluation of their pregnancy and the baby’s development.

This is not a rushed appointment or merely a routine check-up. It is a time-dedicated and in-depth consultation, the purpose of which is to provide the woman and her family with knowledge, clarity, and reassurance in situations where there are more questions than answers.

When is a prenatal expert assessment appropriate?

A prenatal expert assessment is particularly suitable in situations where:

  • Concerns, doubts, or uncertainty have arisen during pregnancy
  • A previous ultrasound examination or test result requires further explanation
  • A second, independent expert opinion is desired
  • A thorough and calm evaluation is needed before making further decisions
  • There is an inner feeling that the baby’s development should be assessed more comprehensively than is possible with routine screening.

Women whose pregnancy appears to be “entirely normal” also often attend this appointment, seeking reassurance that fetal development has been evaluated as thoroughly and attentively as possible.

How does the appointment take place?

During the prenatal expert assessment, the physician performs a detailed fetal ultrasound examination based on the gestational age and the specific clinical question. The examination does not focus solely on individual measurements, but on fetal development as a whole. To support examination quality, the Fetal Ultrasound Centre uses modern ultrasound and AI-based analysis solutions to help physicians assess fetal structures and development as accurately as possible.

Throughout the ultrasound examination, the findings are explained step by step in clear, understandable language. Questions are answered calmly, and there is time to reflect on both the findings and their significance.

If necessary, further options are discussed, including:

  • Whether observation alone is sufficient
  • Whether additional examinations would be appropriate
  • When and how the pregnancy should be monitored in the future

If any deviations are identified, their possible significance is explained honestly and in a balanced manner, without haste or unnecessary anxiety.

In some cases, an expert prenatal evaluation may indicate that additional investigations are warranted to increase diagnostic certainty. When necessary, invasive diagnostic procedures—including amniocentesis and chorionic villus sampling—can also be performed at the Fetal Ultrasound Centre. Decisions regarding further steps are always made together with the woman and her family, taking into account the individual situation and personal preferences.

In cases of more complex findings, we involve specialist colleagues when needed and assist in organising the following steps, so that the patient does not have to navigate the healthcare system alone.

How does this service differ from a routine examination?

The prenatal expert assessment is not a standardised “one-size-fits-all” service. Each appointment is individual and tailored to the person, her pregnancy, and her specific questions.

The focus of this service is not only diagnostics, but also:

  • understanding, not just answers
  • clarity, not medical confusion
  • calm, not haste

Many families describe this appointment as helping them continue the pregnancy with greater confidence and inner peace.

Purpose of the service

The purpose of an expert prenatal evaluation is not to make decisions on behalf of the woman or to steer her toward a particular choice. It aims to provide precise and reliable information so that the woman and her family can make their own decisions in an informed and thoughtful manner.
