This might seem like a long week, but your pregnancy is not considered overtime, if 42 weeks have not passed and thereafter your delivery is brought about. Your baby’s weight, the amount of amniotic fluid surrounding your baby and the welfare condition of the fetus are the factors for deciding whether your delivery is evoked, cross section will be made to you or you can have a natural delivery.

 

Your baby

Your baby is ready for birth. The hormone produced in its adrenal glands signifies that it is ready to make its first breathe, keep the temperature and start sucking. Due to the latter the cascade of hormones in your body breaks out by leading you to the labour activities, shortening of cervix and birth of child.

The pregnancy of 5-10 % of the pregnant women lasts over 294 days (over 42 full weeks). Such pregnancy is called overcarried pregnancy, in case of which the risk for fetal birth trauma, complications caused by lack of oxygen incurred during birth and also fetal intrauterine death and postnatal death of the newborn has increased. To avoid the overcarried pregnancy, the delivery is brought about which compared to wait-and-see tactics decreases the risk of losing the child.

 

Approximately 20% of the pregnant women still need emergency cross section due to the failed evoking of delivery, ineffective labour activities or lack of oxygen of the child. The need of performance of cross section depends on whether this is a new mother or the one having given birth before. The evoking of delivery for the mothers having delivered before ends with cross section in about 10% if the cases, the percentage being 30% in case of new mothers. The length of the cervix measured prior to the evoking of birth with additional properties of mother (size of pregnancy, number of births, age of mother, body mass index of mother) offers useful assumed value on the success of evoking the delivery, possibility of spontaneous delivery within the next 24 hours and on the probability of emergency cross section.
