Pregnancy week by week

Selected week:

You

Your hormonal balance will again be in place which mitigates the potential nausea. If you are giving birth for the first time, the stomach muscles could hide your pregnancy externally. In case of the next pregnancies the expanding stomach will be visible for others from week 12. The uterus increases and rises, forward over the pubic bone and the doctor can feel it when touching your stomach. At the moment the height of the bottom of your uterus is 12-14 centimetres, but this indicator increases about one centimetre a week, by reaching 37-42 centimetres by the end of pregnancy.

Your baby

The figure of your baby is now final and it is about 6-7 cm long and weighs about 14 g. It swims around the uterus and it has acquired the sucking and swallowing reflex. The lungs of the growing baby are developing and it makes the first primitive breathing movements called fetal breathing. The nerve cells are formed, as a result the fetus is able to feel pain to some extent. Its face looks really like a human face and the origins of milk teeth develop inside the gums.

What to do?

If OSCAR test has been successfully passed and pregnancy starts to show more and more, it is appropriate time to inform about the pregnancy to the wider family circle, friends and colleagues. You should probably update your wardrobe, as your old clothes are not fit for you anymore.

Have you already been to OSCAR test?

Why is it important to know the existence of pre-eclampsia risk?

The rate of occurrence of early pre-eclampsia is 0.5%, i.e. 1 case per 200 pregnancies. Pre-eclampsia is a pregnancy-related complication, in case of which mother has high blood pressure, the function of kidneys and liver is disturbed, the fetus has a growth restriction and the disease can culminate with cramps of the mother which is a potential life-threatening condition for the mother as well as the baby. The only possibility to save the mother and the baby is the birth. The situation is not good when pre-eclampsia develops at the early stage of pregnancy when the baby cannot breathe by itself yet, but it is necessary to give birth to save the life of the mother. Today the prophylactic treatment of pre-eclampsia could be started for the women in the risk group before the 16th pregnancy week which prevents the occurrence of pre-eclampsia by 89% before the 32th pregnancy week which is important in improvement of the survival rate of newborns. It is possible to assess the risk of early pre-eclampsia within the scope of OSCAR test. Read more about preeclampsia.
