Postnatal ultrasound examination
A postpartum ultrasound examination performed 6–8 weeks after childbirth is intended to ensure that your body is recovering normally after pregnancy and delivery. Even if you are already feeling well, the examination helps detect changes that may not always cause immediate symptoms.
During this examination, the following is assessed:
-
Whether the uterus has returned to its normal size and shape;
-
Whether any placental or fetal membrane remnants remain in the uterine cavity;
-
Whether there are any signs of infection, fluid accumulation, or hematomas;
-
In the case of a cesarean section, whether the scar has adequately healed;
-
The condition of the ovaries and the uterine lining (endometrium), and how the menstrual cycle is beginning to recover;
-
Whether everything is to safely plan a new pregnancy or start using contraception, if needed.
The examination is safe and painless and provides you and your physician with reassurance that recovery is progressing well, or, if necessary, allows for early detection and treatment of any problems.
