A glucose tolerance test is used to assess how the body responds to a glucose load. During pregnancy, this test is primarily used to diagnose gestational diabetes. Since gestational diabetes often develops without noticeable symptoms, it is important to detect it early in order to ensure the health and well-being of both the mother and the baby.

The test is usually performed between 24 and 28 weeks of pregnancy. However, in women with higher risk factors, the examination may be performed in early pregnancy and repeated later if necessary.

The test should be performed in the morning on an empty stomach — you should not eat for at least 8 hours before the examination, although drinking water is allowed.

First, a fasting blood glucose sample is taken from a vein. You will then drink a solution containing 75 g of glucose. Loote Ultrahelikeskus offers a choice between orange- or lemon-flavored drinks and serves them chilled to make them easier to tolerate. The cost of the glucose solution is included in the test's total price, and no additional payment is required.

If necessary, for example, in cases of nausea or if a previous experience with the test has been unpleasant (such as vomiting), we may use anti-nausea medication to make the examination more comfortable.

The test takes approximately 2 hours in total. During this time, you may relax in our comfortable waiting area, where you can rest, read, or use your personal electronic devices.

Blood glucose levels are measured again at 1 and 2 hours, and the test results are usually available the same day.

Gestational diabetes is diagnosed if at least one of the following values is above the normal range:

fasting blood glucose ≥ 5.1 mmol/L
1-hour value ≥ 10.0 mmol/L
2-hour value ≥ 8.5 mmol/L

If the test result is normal, routine pregnancy follow-up will continue. If gestational diabetes is diagnosed, our midwife, Janet, will provide guidance regarding nutrition, blood sugar monitoring, and further management. When necessary, we use continuous glucose monitoring and collaborate with an endocrinologist to find the most suitable treatment approach for you.

When needed, we also assess fetal growth, placental function, and fetal well-being to help ensure that your pregnancy progresses as safely as possible and that you feel informed and reassured throughout the entire process.
